Agent framework: Use an open-source framework like OpenClaw that provides workspace isolation, skill management, and audit logging. Avoid building your own agent framework. It is a rabbit hole that distracts from your actual business.
Version control: Git is non-negotiable. AI agents need to create branches, open pull requests, and participate in code review workflows. Make sure your Git hosting supports API-driven workflows.
CI/CD: Automated testing and deployment are critical when AI agents are writing code. Your CI/CD pipeline is the safety net that catches errors before they reach production.
Communication: Use platforms with good APIs (Slack, Discord) so agents can participate in team communication. Avoid tools that are designed for human-only interaction.
Project management: Linear or similar tools with strong APIs. Your operations agent needs to create, update, and close tasks programmatically.

Parallel execution. Humans work sequentially (mostly). AI agents can work in parallel. If you need to build five features, do not queue them sequentially. Deploy them to your development agent simultaneously and let it context-switch between them.
Continuous operation. Humans work 8-10 hours a day. AI agents work 24 hours. Design your workflows to take advantage of this. Submit tasks at end of day, review results in the morning.
Structured handoffs. The interface between human decisions and agent execution needs to be crisp. Define clear formats for task specifications, approval criteria, and escalation triggers. Ambiguity kills agent productivity.
Feedback loops. Build mechanisms for humans to quickly evaluate and provide feedback on agent output. The faster the feedback loop, the faster the agent improves.

Agents are team members, not tools. This sounds abstract, but it has practical implications. We give our agents names, roles, and accountability. When Sam (our CTO agent) produces a buggy deployment, we do not blame “the AI.” We analyze what went wrong in Sam's configuration, skills, or guardrails and fix the root cause. This framing leads to better debugging and more systematic improvement.

Mistake 2: Insufficient human oversight. In the early days, review everything your agents produce. Build trust gradually. Reduce oversight only as you develop confidence in the agent's output quality for specific task types.
Mistake 3: Ignoring cost management. AI agent operations have variable costs (LLM API calls, compute resources). Set up cost monitoring and alerts from day one. A misconfigured agent can burn through your budget overnight.
